A Free Way to Support your Libraries using Amazon.com

Although the best place to buy books is at our book sale, your Amazon.com purchases now can also benefit Palo Alto libraries. Just go to Amazon.com by first clicking on the Amazon logo at the top of our website and 5% of your purchase amount will go to support the libraries. This applies not only to books, but also to CDs, DVDs, videos, software, and other items that you purchase at Amazon.com (although we get at most $10 for some items that cost more than $200).  Please bookmark our site and remember to click on the Amazon logo there whenever you go to Amazon.com. Try it now.

Book Sale Crisis

As you may recall, the agreement to return the Terman school site to the Palo Alto School district means that we will lose the use of Wing 30 for our monthly book sales, starting in September.  Marty Paddock of the Friends of the Palo Alto Library has been actively working with the city staff to find space.  One proposal is to move the book sale into a much smaller area in a relocatable building at the Cubberley site on Middlefield Ave. This has not yet been approved by the city planning department. The Friends of the Palo Alto Library will meet again with the city to discuss the options in about three weeks.  We are continuing to look for other possible sites for the book sale.

Meanwhile, February's book sale earned more than $12,000, which is an all-time high.  Our thanks to the many volunteers, donors, and buyers who make the sale possible.  See the Palo Alto Weekly article (second item).

Visit our Book Group on March 14

Come and join our Book Group in a lively discussion of Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring on Thursday, March 14 at the Lucie Stern Community Center Fireside Room from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  The novel depicts the life of Dutch master artist Johannes Vermeer through the eyes of a young servant who eventually becomes the model for one of Vermeer's most famous paintings.  Our Book Group meets on the second Thursday of each month.  More information.  Read reviews and order Girl with a Pearl Earring from Amazon.com (5% of your purchase will go to help Palo Alto libraries).

Library Planning for Improvements

The library staff continues to work very hard to prepare plans for the improvements to the Main, Mitchell Park, and Children's Libraries.  These plans will help determine the amount to be raised by the bond measure that will be on this November's ballot.  The prestigious architectural firm of Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle has been hired to draw up plans for remodeling or replacing the Main Library building.  Mary Jo Levy, director of Palo Alto's libraries, urges the public to attend upcoming council meetings and public reviews so that the new plans will best reflect Palo Alto's needs.

This notice comes to you from the non-profit organization Friends of the Palo Alto Library.  We're proud to have provided over $100,000 in 2001 to help Palo Alto public libraries.  Visit our web site.  Become a member.
