December Sale Highlights
We've finally had a chance to work on the backlog of donations we've had
since the end of summer. Let's hope the weather cooperates. In the event
of rain or high probability of rain on Saturday there will be
NO Tent Sale outside the main entrance but many of the books
slated for the Tent Sale will be on sale inside the Main Room.
Other highlights: There are good "gift quality" books in all
sections - Home and Crafts has a nice selection of books on
Fiber Arts (sewing, crocheting, weaving, knitting, quilting, etc)....
Large Format, also known as "coffee table" books has some really
nice and interesting items, many at surprisingly low prices....
History is loaded once again with fresh stock on all topics....
Our Foreign Language section manager has a variety of fine books
in all the usual languages and is featuring Polish and Danish
this month, and right across the aisle is a bookcase full of Russian
texts.... Whether you're a programmer or a hardware hacker there is
bound to be something for you in Computers....
The Earth and Animals section covers a wide variety of topics from
Geology and the Environment to Dogs and Cats (Horses too!). You'll also
find bird books and hiking and climbing guides....
The Eastern Religion section received a unique array of books
and booklets dealing with various Indian faiths and philosophies, mostly
Hinduism, many printed in India.
Members Early Sale This Month
The FOPAL Board of Directors has set the annual Members-Early sale for Saturday
December 12. If you're a Member of the Friends of the Palo Alto Library, you'll
be able to get in early to the Main Room at our December 12 sale. At this
once-a-year event, Life Members are allowed to enter the sale at 9am and
can purchase up to 50 books. Members at all other levels can enter the
sale at 10am and purchase the normal 12 books at a time.
Tickets for early arrivers are handled differently at the Members-Early sale.
Tickets given out are for the 9 am and 10 am lines at the Main Room, since most
people who come early are Members of the Friends. Each Member will get just one
ticket, although Members at and above the $25 levels may bring in their families,
consisting of one or two adults and children, while Life Members may bring in
their spouses. Tickets for the 11am line are one per person.
You can become a Member or renew your membership dues at door on the day of the sale.
Regular Membership in the Friends is only $15 ($10 for students and seniors, $25
for families) and is tax-deductible. Members also receive a discount coupon by
mail for the sale, a 10% discount at the Books Inc. at the Town and Country
Village, and eligibility for the Stanford Federal Credit Union, which has a new
convenient Downtown office.

weekend using our
Exceptional/Collectible Books Display Case
The books in this case are offered to our regular customers for one
month before they are listed online. The prices at the sale are
significantly BELOW what they will be offered for sale online. On
Saturday there will be a sign up sheet on the case for priority
access. Due to the crowds in the room in the early part of the sale,
no books will be sold from the cabinet until 1pm. On Sunday, access to
the cabinet will be any time during the hours of the sale. See any
FOPAL volunteer to unlock the case for you.

Foreign Language Texts Popular - Danish & Polish Featured This Month
We've always gotten a good number of donations of books in many
different languages. We are getting regular donations of really nice
books in French, German, Spanish, and Russian, but more and more we
are seeing larger donations in other languages as well. Our selection
of Russian books now resides in its own book case under the window in
the Foreign Language section. We've also got a good selection of
titles in Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin and much, much more.
Last Chance for Holiday Books, Music and Gifts
The last of our Christmas inventory is up for grabs. You'll find a nice selection of
Christmas and Thanksgiving material on the Specials Table near the checkout
tables, and more in the book case just inside the entrance. Don't forget to
check out the Ephemera in front of the building for some non book and media
Christmas items (weather permitting).|
Sunday Fun Day - Mystery 50% Off Sale; Free Books for Sunday Shoppers
Sundays are a great time to shop the Book Sale. The atmosphere is quiet
and peaceful and there are still thousands of great books available.
Each Sunday we have a 50% off sale on one category of books in the Main
Room. The category will not be announced ahead of time, the only way you
can find out which category is on sale is by attending the sale on Sunday.
Signs will be posted on the doors and on the shelves of the section
involved on the morning of the Sale. In addition, we will have a small
selection of FREE books available to shoppers on Sunday. One free
book per person, and you must purchase at least one item from the Sale.
There are a limited number of free books and first-come, first-served.
This applies to the Main Room only. Doors open at 11 am.
Think Ecologically! - Bring or Donate Your Own Bags
Due to the increasing reuse of grocery and other bags, we tend to run
short at our sales and encourage you to bring your own cloth tote or
paper bags to the sale. If you have any extra grocery bags in good
condition please bring them for your purchases at the sale. We would
also gladly accept any extra bags you wish to donate. NO BOXES are
allowed in the sale, however.
Palo Alto's Libraries While You Shop
By shopping at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park and Amazon.com, a
percentage of your purchase price can help the Palo Alto Libraries at
no cost to you. At Kepler's,
just mention to the cashier that you want to support the Friends of
the Palo Alto Library. For Amazon.com, always start your shopping
clicking here or on the Amazon link on the top right of any of
our web pages at
Virtually all purchases you make at Amazon are eligible, not just
books. Over the years, we've raised thousands of dollars to help
our libraries through these programs.
