ALL PROCEEDS GO TO HELP PALO ALTO LIBRARIES

Marty's (Main) Book Room
In our Main Room, prices are way below what used book stores charge.  Paperbacks are 50 cents and up, and hardcovers are $1 and up.  Numbered tickets for the Main Room are given out beginning at 8 am on Saturday.  These reserve your place in the line that forms before the 11 am opening.  You may pick up a ticket for yourself and for one other person.

Children's Books in K-6
Room K-6 in the K wing (see map) is entirely filled with children's books and toys.  You'll find picture books, school age fiction, award winners, non-English titles, and books for parents and teachers, many for under $1.  This room and the Bargain Room open at 10 am on Saturday.

Bargain Books in K-7
Next door in K-7 is the Bargain Room, where paperbacks are 50 cents, hardcovers are $1, and children's books are just 25 cents each.  The room also contains many LP records and 78s at $1 each.  On Sunday, the room opens at 11 am and all prices are half off.  Save even more on Sundays by buying grocery bags from us for $5 each and stuffing them with any items in the room. Buy 4 bags and get the 5th one FREE!

Libraries Closed for Memorial Day May 25

Palo Alto libraries will be closed Monday May 25 for Memorial Day.

Even when the libraries are closed, you can still search the online catalog, submit reference desk questions, access many online resources, and get book recommendations.

Non-Profit Book Giveaway

Non-profit organizations and schools that need FREE books should come to the Bargain Room this month from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, May 10.  Please bring your own grocery bags to put books into.  More information.

May Sale Doings

Don't forget Mother's Day is Sunday May 10. Give your Mom a call before you head out to the Sale, buy her a nice book, or better - bring her to the Sale!

Our donations during most months usually include one or two large collections of a particular subject. Of note recently was the incredible Cookbook donation which took three months to get through. This month, while we still received a lot of nice donations, did not include any particular subject, but we have a nice assortment of all subjects. Some highlights for this month: The History shelves are full as usual. Across the aisle Military History features some Korean and Vietnam War material, as well as some rare items which are in the Exceptional Books case (see below). Sports is well represented with a fine selection of Baseball & Golf books. Next to Sports there are some nice books on Sailing as well as Aviation. There are also more Exercise and Sports Medicine books in the Specials case right inside the entrance door. In the Computer section, along with the usual fine assortment of contemporary books, we have a nice collection of vintage and historical texts. We have an outstanding selection in Foreign Languages, especially books in French and German. An unusual, but high quality donation of books in Farsi, many printed in Iran, will be featured as well.

Bag Shortage - Bring or Donate Bags

Perhaps due to the adoption of reusing grocery bags, we have been running short of bags for both our General Sale and our Bag Sale in the Bargain Room on Sunday. If you have any extra grocery bags in good condition please bring them for your purchases at the sale. We would also gladly accept any bags you wish to donate. Also note you can bring your own reusable tote bags for your purchase. NO BOXES are allowed in the sale, however.

Exceptional/Collectible Books Display Case

The March Sale marked the debut of our "exceptional books" showcase. We've restocked it with a new group of great books. The books in this case are offered to our regular customers for one month before they are listed online. The prices at the sale are significantly BELOW what they will be offered for sale online. On Saturday there will be a sign up sheet on the case for priority access. Due to the crowds in the room in the early part of the sale, no books will be sold from the cabinet until 1pm. On Sunday, access to the cabinet will be any time during the hours of the sale. See any FOPAL volunteer to unlock the case for you.

Music Lovers: Vinyl Is Back! Hundreds More LP Records Available

For the second month in a row a bonanza of LPs were donated. A select few dozen rare, classic, and exceptional condition LPs are for sale in the Main Room priced from only $2-10. The majority of it can be found in the Bargain Room at $1 per disk. However on Sunday you can fill a bag with sonic treasures for $5. Most people can fit 15-20 records in a bag. There is something for every musical taste.

Sunday! Sunday! Mystery 50% Off Sale; Free Books for Sunday Shoppers

On Sunday May 10 there will be a 50% off sale on one category of books in the Main Room. The category will not be announced ahead of time, the only way you can find out which category is on sale is by attending the sale on Sunday. Signs will be posted on the doors and on the shelves of the section involved on the morning of the Sale. In addition, we will have a small selection of FREE books available to shoppers on Sunday. One free book per person, and you must purchase at least one item from the Sale. There are a limited number of free books and first-come, first-served. This applies to the Main Room only.
