Marty's (Main) Book Room
In our Main Room, prices are way below what used book stores charge.  Paperbacks are 50 cents and up, and hardcovers are $1 and up.  Numbered tickets for the Main Room are given out beginning at 8 am on Saturday.  These reserve your place in the line that forms before the 11 am opening.  You may pick up a ticket for yourself and for one other person.

Children's Books in K-6
Room K-6 in the K wing (see map) is entirely filled with children's books and toys.  You'll find picture books, school age fiction, award winners, non-English titles, and books for parents and teachers, many for under $1.  This room and the Bargain Room open at 10 am on Saturday.

Bargain Books in K-7
Next door in K-7 is the Bargain Room, where paperbacks are 50 cents, hardcovers are $1, and children's books are just 25 cents each.  The room also contains many LP records and 78s at $1 each.  On Sunday, the room opens at 11 am and all prices are half off.  Save even more on Sundays by buying grocery bags from us for $5 each and stuffing them with any items in the room. Buy 4 bags and get the 5th one FREE!

Author Melanie Gideon To Speak at FOPAL Annual Meeting Oct 18
Melanie Gideon, author of The Slippery Year will speak at the Friends of the Palo Alto Library Annual Meeting on Sunday, October 18, at 2 pm. This meeting will take place in the Ballroom at the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road.

Ms. Gideon's recent work "...chronicles a year in which she confronts both the fantasies of her receding youth and the realities of midlife with a husband, a child, and a dog (one of whom runs away). She reflects on the exigencies of domesticity -- the need for a household catastrophe plan, the fainting spell occasioned by the departure of her nine-year-old son for camp, the mattress wars, and the carpool line. With tenderness, unsparing honesty, and uproarious wit, Gideon brings us back again and again to the sweetness of ordinary pleasures and to life's most enduring satisfactions. She captures perfectly that moment right before everything changes and the things we have loved forever begin to fall away for the first time."

Non-Profit Book Giveaway
Non-profit organizations and schools that need FREE books should come to the Bargain Room this month from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, September 14.  Please bring your own grocery bags to put books into.  More information.

September Sale Highlights

We know it sounds like we say this every month, but donations continue to arrive in record numbers. Since May we've gotten such a load of donations that we actually have a backlog. We don't mind one bit as it means that our Sales should be fully stocked all Winter long! Of special note this month is a fine collection of books on Martial Arts covering just about every form imaginable from Aikido to Zen Fighting(?). Because of the size and variety of titles and subjects included you'll find these in different sections -- white Specials showcase, Military History (hand to hand combat), Health (Judo, Karate, Tae Kwon Do), and a few in Eastern Religion.... Some of the hottest summer movies in recent years have been based on Graphic Novels. Combining the beginning to end storytelling of a novel with the artwork of a comic book, the format has been around since the early 20th century, found its place during the 1970s and 1980s, and more recently has taken off becoming one of the fastest growing genres. We have an outstanding collection of recent vintage Graphic Novels on the West Wall next to Fiction.... HP Labs recently closed its corporate library and donated the remaining books to the Friends. A fine selection of Computer books from the library is available on and below the specials table near the cashier stations. Note that most of these have the usual library stamps and stickers but for the most part the texts are in perfect condition. We'll be selling more from this donation in the coming months.... The Home and Crafts Section Manager reports that she's got a nice selection of Quilting books on the shelves as well as books on just about everything you ever wanted to know about Weddings.... History is showcasing Chinese History this month. See the Specials table and the History Section.... Music is showcasing Guitars and Guitarists.

Exceptional/Collectible Books Display Case
The books in this case are offered to our regular customers for one month before they are listed online. The prices at the sale are significantly BELOW what they will be offered for sale online. On Saturday there will be a sign up sheet on the case for priority access. Due to the crowds in the room in the early part of the sale, no books will be sold from the cabinet until 1pm. On Sunday, access to the cabinet will be any time during the hours of the sale. See any FOPAL volunteer to unlock the case for you.

Foreign Language Texts Popular - Dutch, Swedish & Polish Featured
We've always gotten a good number of donations of books in many different languages. We are getting regular donations of really nice books in French, German, Spanish, and Russian, but more and more we are seeing larger donations in other languages as well. Our selection of Russian books now resides in its own book case under the window in the Foreign Language section. We've also got a good selection of titles in Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korea, and much, much more. Three of the of the featured languages this month are Dutch, Swedish, and Polish. Our Section Manager says, "there is some really nice stuff here!"

Children's Room Has Loads of Books
The Children's Room manager has asked us to pass along that they are once again fully stocked with great stuff including the popular Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books for the budding detective in your family (and they are in mint condition!) For those who may be interested in Star Wars having recently seen the well rated movie, we have all kinds of books about the Star Wars series. Many young girls just love horses and we have several series devoted to horses. For the beginning readers in the 6-9 year old range, we have the popular Magic Tree House books. For parents who are trying to get their little boys to read more and play fewer video games, we have the hugely popular Captain Underpants books guaranteed to bring laughter. For little girls who love the American Girl books we have a large number of these books also. Star Trek, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Babysitters Club, Animorphs, Goosebumps, and the Animal Ark. And of course, we always have the Harry Potter books.

College Terrace Closing Results in DVD & Audio Book Bonanza
The College Terrace library was closed in July for renovations. Although some of the collection was merged with other branches, and some put into storage, the Library donated some 200-300 DVD titles and series to the Friends. Our Media Section Manager has been really busy sorting, organizing and pricing them which you will find in the usual media sections in the Main Room. In addition they sent us dozens of boxes of audio books on cassette, which will all be in the Bargain Room due to lack of space. If you can still use the cassette format a bonanza awaits with titles available on a variety of subjects.

Sunday Fun Day - Mystery 50% Off Sale; Free Books for Sunday Shoppers
On Sunday September 14 there will be a 50% off sale on one category of books in the Main Room. The category will not be announced ahead of time, the only way you can find out which category is on sale is by attending the sale on Sunday. Signs will be posted on the doors and on the shelves of the section involved on the morning of the Sale. In addition, we will have a small selection of FREE books available to shoppers on Sunday. One free book per person, and you must purchase at least one item from the Sale. There are a limited number of free books and first-come, first-served. This applies to the Main Room only. Doors open at 11 am.

Think Ecologically! - Bring or Donate Your Own Bags

Due to the increasing reuse of grocery and other bags, we tend to run short at our sales and encourage you to bring your own cloth tote or paper bags to the sale. If you have any extra grocery bags in good condition please bring them for your purchases at the sale. We would also gladly accept any extra bags you wish to donate. NO BOXES are allowed in the sale, however.
